Method 1: Free Hand Winged Eyeliner

  • Step 1: Firstly prep your eyes by applying concealer below your eyes and on the eyelid.
  • Step 2: You can now apply eye shadow if desired. You can opt for smokey eyes for an intense and bold look. I have applied a subtle amount of eye shadow here.
  • Step 3: Draw a line starting from the outer corner of your eye extending upward making a 45-degree angle with the outer corner of the eye. The length of the wing depends on you. For a subtle look opt for a shorter length.
  • Step 4: Now from the inner corner of your eye start drawing a thin line on the upper lash line gradually increasing its width and finally connect it with the outer edge of the lower line.
  • Step 5: Now fill up the gap completely to get the perfect winged eyeliner look.

Bravo, it’s done. You can apply mascara now to complete the look.

This is how I do my winged eyeliner. However, if this method is not suitable for you then you can make use of other alternatives like tape, card, bobby pin, or eye shadow tracing.

Method 2: Perfect Winged Eyeliner Using Tape

  • Step 1: Cut a small piece of tape and place it at a 45-degree angle with the outer corner of the eye. Note: Make sure you reduce the stickiness of the tape by lifting the tape a few times off your hand.
  • Step 2: Draw a line in the direction of the tape using tape as a stencil. The length of the wing depends on you.
  • Step 3: Now from the inner corner of your eye draw a thin line on the upper lash line gradually increase its width and then connect it with the wing you just created.
  • Step 4: Fill up the gaps and gently remove the tape. You can now apply mascara to finish the look.

Method 3: How To Get Perfect Winged Eyeliner Every time Using Card

  • Step 1: Place the card edge just below the outer corner of your eye as if it’s just the continuation of your lower lash line.
  • Step 2: Trace a line using a card as a stencil. The length of the wing depends on the intensity of drama you wish to add to your eyes.
  • Step 3: Finish it off by drawing a line starting from the inner corner of the eye on the upper lash line slowly increasing the line width and connecting it with the outer edge of the lower line.

Method 4: Perfect Winged Eyeliner Using Bobby Pin

  • Step 1: Take a bobby pin and dip it in the eyeliner pot.
  • Step 2: Carefully place the bobby pin diagonally with the outer corner of the eyes. Make sure your hands are steady while placing this.
  • Step 3: Draw a line initiating from the inner corner of your eye and connect it with the wing you just created.
  • Step 4: Finish it off by filling up all the gaps. Apply mascara to complete the look.

  • Step 1: Draw a line using an eye shadow sponge tip brush from the outer corner of your eye as shown in the image. I am using black color eye shadow to draw the line.
  • Step 2: Now draw a line on the upper eyelashes with an eye shadow brush starting from the inner corner of your eye and connect it with the outer edge of the wing.
  • Step 3: Trace this with your eyeliner. Trace along the line you created with eye shadow.
  • Step 4: Finish it off and apply mascara.

  1. Fine point tip eyeliner brush gives better results in achieving winged eyes.
  2. If you make a mess then do not worry. Take a wet wipe and wipe the outer line in a sharp edge. This gives you sharp and pointed winged eyes.
  3. Always apply eye shadow and complete your eye makeup before doing winged eyes otherwise eyeliner may get smudged.
